Gray Spring Morning

Writer's picture: Elizabeth HosmanekElizabeth Hosmanek

There are four days left in the month of April. Looking back at pictures from 2021 and 2020, the trees and plants in our gardens are at least two weeks behind this year. I walked the garden this morning to take pictures of what is currently in bloom. I'm sorely out of practice with the close up setting on our Canon camera, so today was good practice for the upcoming gardening season. The hostas and daylilies will be at their best display from mid June until late July, with many daylilies blooming strong through late August. Daylily 'Autumn Minaret' will bloom in September, and then everyone will be done for the year.

The five trees that we planted in 2021 all survived the winter. The two new crabapple trees have leaves emerging and flower bud clusters forming. The four crabapple trees that I planted in 2016 and 2017 are all close to blooming.

Though I left all six dogs in the fenced yard this morning, they did not forget for a moment where I was in proximity to them while I walked the gardens. The farther I walked from them, the louder the complaints registered through barking and other vocalizations.

When I was finished with my solitary garden walk, I went into the dog yard through the north gate, and a raucous celebration ensued.
