I look for dog foods that are nutritionally balanced, without corn or legumes. Legumes of any kind artificially inflate protein levels in dog food so they are a cheap filler, more abundant in “grain free” type foods. All of the foods and treats listed here have zero corn and zero or very low amounts of plant protein. Rice (brown and white), oatmeal, barley, and millet are all good grain sources. Treats and supplements (including canned fish) are limited to no more than 20% of daily caloric intake for my dogs. Canned fish is high in sodium so be sure to compare labels. The choices I listed contain the lowest sodium that I have found at this time. Canned fish with bones and skin included is an excellent source of omega 3 oils, protein and calcium. I found that pure salmon oil upsets the GI tracts of my Vallhunds, with similar results from other fish oils.
